Summer is just peaking around the corner, what are you going to do? Are you going to stay inside, continue going through the typical routine, and not branch out? Some may choose that route, and others may want some additional ideas for this spring, summer, and fall while the weather is gorgeous!
My summers consist of alternative cardio, strength training, and outdoor activities. I am blessed to live in Colorado, and I know there are so many things to do in EVERY state.
My go-to activity: hiking! I love to go hiking every single week, and usually it's a different trail each week. Getting outside and hiking allows me to clear my mind, get an awesome long distance version of an interval workout. There are inclines, rocks, declines, and various other challenges along the trail. If you have these at your fingertips, use them! Not every workout needs to be a detailed start/stop time and intensity.
Riding your bike. Bike riding can be an amazing way to burn calories, enjoy the outside, and improve aerobic capacity, agility, body awareness, and so much more. Whether it is on a trail system, or around the neighborhood you can usually find a great spot to enjoy.
Join a summer league! Softball, soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, there are so many choices! This will give you something to train for with your time spent in the gym, and something to look forward to at the end of your week. This is a time with friends to bond with physical activity and sport while the weather is primed for the occasion.
Don't forget to keep these activities in balance with the rest of your life. This is a time that you should be able to fit one, or more of these activities somewhere in your schedule, but not at the expense of something else important. Do me a favor and pull out your summer schedule and see if there is a vacancy you can fill with something healthy and fun! Trust me, you will not regret it!
